Tips for the Best At-Home Newborn Photo Session Experience

As an at-home newborn photographer, my mission is to capture those fleeting, precious moments of a newborn’s early days. Each session is unique, filled with intimate and spontaneous moments that reflect the love and joy of a growing family. To ensure the best possible experience, I’ve found that following two key practices can make a significant difference: staying centered and calm regardless of the kids’ behavior as well as  loving on and interacting with each other as if I wasn’t there. Let’s dive into these practices and see how they can enhance your photo session.

1. Stay Centered and Calm Regardless of the Kids’ Behavior

Embracing the Unpredictability

Newborns and young children are naturally unpredictable. They might cry, need frequent breaks, or be full of energy. As a photographer, it’s essential to embrace this unpredictability and maintain a calm, centered demeanor. Your calmness can help set the tone for the entire session, making everyone feel more at ease, and perhaps even excited about future sessions.

Embracing Patience

When kids are involved, things may not always go as planned. Here are some strategies to help you stay patient and centered:

Finding Humor in the Chaos

Newborn sessions can be unpredictable, and sometimes things can get a little chaotic. Finding humor in these moments not only helps to diffuse tension but also creates genuine, candid shots that reflect the true spirit of the family..

Creating a Calm Environment

A calm environment is conducive to a successful photo session. Here are some strategies to create a serene setting:

2. Love and Interact with each other (it’s ok to pretend I’m not there!)

Fostering Genuine Connections

The most beautiful family photos are those that capture genuine love and connection. I’ll encourage you to interact with each other as you normally would, without feeling the pressure of posing for the camera. This creates authentic moments that truly reflect your relationships. Some of the best photos are taken when you are simply enjoying each other’s company. I might encourage you to talk, laugh, and play as you normally would, asking you to plan a few activities you love doing together, whether it’s reading a book, playing a game, or taking a walk. These natural interactions make for heartfelt and meaningful images.

Capturing Everyday Moments

Everyday moments are often the most precious and memorable. I might also encourage you to go about your usual routines and activities during the session. This approach not only makes them feel more comfortable but also results in photos that are a true representation of their daily lives.

Morning Routines: Capture the family during their morning routines, such as making breakfast together or getting ready for the day. These moments are intimate and full of love.

Playtime: Document playtime activities, whether it’s building a fort, playing with toys, or spending time outdoors. These candid moments are filled with joy and spontaneity.

Bedtime Rituals: For newborn sessions, capturing bedtime rituals like bath time, reading a bedtime story, or cuddling can create beautiful and tender images.

By staying centered and calm, and reframing how you view your photo session, you can create a seamless and enjoyable experience.
